An ICU nurse accidentally uncovers a patient’s frightening past in this chilling thriller.
Meghan Michaels is trying to find balance between being a single mom to a teenage daughter and working as a full time nurse. While on duty at the hospital one day, a patient named Caitlin arrives in a coma with a traumatic brain injury, having jumped from a bridge and plunging over twenty feet to the train tracks below.
But when a witness comes forward with shocking details about the fall, it calls everything they know into question. Was Caitlin pushed and if so, by whom and why?
Meghan has always tried to stay emotionally detached from her patients, but this time, she mistakenly lets herself get too close until she’s deeply entangled in Caitlin’s and her family’s lives. Only when it’s too late, does she realize that she and her daughter could be the next victims.

I have been enjoying Mary Kubica’s books and couldn’t wait to start this one. The book is a gripping and atmospheric thriller that plunges you into the complexities of a nurse’s life while unravelling a mystery that becomes increasingly personal and dangerous. The story’s blend of suspense, emotional depth and unexpected twists makes it a compelling read from beginning to end.

The protagonist, Meghan Michaels, is portrayed with a striking authenticity. As a single mother balancing her demanding job as an ICU nurse and raising a teenage daughter, Meghan’s life is a constant juggling act. Kubica does an excellent job of portraying the everyday struggles and stresses that come with Meghan’s dual roles, making her a relatable and sympathetic character.

The inciting incident occurs when Caitlin, a young woman with a traumatic brain injury, is admitted to the hospital after falling from a bridge. The initial assumption is that Caitlin attempted suicide, but the plot thickens when a witness suggests she may have been pushed. This revelation thrusts Meghan into a web of uncertainty and danger as she becomes more involved in Caitlin’s case. Kubica builds suspense as Meghan’s professional and personal boundaries blur. Despite her usual practice of maintaining emotional detachment, Meghan finds herself drawn into Caitlin’s life and that of her family. The stakes rise dramatically as Meghan uncovers disturbing details about Caitlin’s past and the circumstances surrounding her fall.

The novel excels in creating an atmosphere of tension and unease. The hospital setting, with its inherent life-and-death stakes, adds a layer of urgency to the unfolding mystery. Kubica’s writing is crisp and evocative, capturing both the furious energy of the ICU and the quiet moments of introspection that Meghan experiences as she struggles with the unfolding events. One of the most compelling aspects of “She’s Not Sorry” is the interplay between Meghan’s investigation and her personal life. Her relationship with her teenage daughter adds depth to the narrative, highlighting the themes of maternal love and protection. As Meghan digs deeper into Caitlin’s case, the threat to her and her daughter becomes more intense, concluding in a heart-pounding climax.

Kubica’s skill in crafting multidimensional characters is evident throughout the book. The supporting cast, particularly Caitlin’s family, is well-developed and adds richness to the story. The twists and turns are well-paced and keep you guessing until the very end, with the final revelation providing a satisfying and chilling conclusion.

“She’s Not Sorry” is a brilliant thriller that combines an emotional tone with a tightly woven plot. Mary Kubica’s ability to create suspense while exploring her characters’ lives makes this novel a must-read. For those who enjoy thrillers with a strong emotional core and a gripping mystery, “She’s Not Sorry” will not disappoint.

I’ve recently discovered many new authors, and Mary Kubica is one I keep adding to my TBR pile. After reading *Local Woman Missing* earlier this year, I’ve been hooked. I’m grateful for my Audible subscription since, for some reason, this author’s books aren’t available in local bookstores (I’m not sure why!) and are often quite expensive online. Have you read any of her books? Which one is your favourite? Thank you for visiting, and until next time… Happy Reading!
